The Good and The Bad
So the bad news is that I did oversleep by 75 minutes last night. I somehow slept through the compressor going off, which is mind boggling.
However, I’m looking forward to starting the Polynappers of the Future Fund. If any of you have good ideas for how we can spend the money, post it in the comments. We have $1000, and I think the first purchase will be buying two copies of the Claudio Stampi book. I read it last time I attempted this schedule and found it interesting.
The good news is that today has been rock solid, for me at least. I had three sketchy naps, two in cars and one in the plane, but I still felt refreshed each time. Right now I feel great, and I have only an hour and a half until my next nap. I’m extremely psyched about the schedule and I’m really looking forward to using it now that I’m here in Massachusetts with my family.
A couple weeks ago I wrote a letter to Claudio Stampi asking if he wanted to do any tests on me and asking if he’d be interested in meeting up for a quick chat about polyphasic sleep schedule. No response, unfortunately.

I don’t know how any SANE human being could sleep through the noise of an air compressor, but I can see how a polynapper could do it.
I’ve found that it’s easier to wake up to visual or touch stimuli than it is to wake up to sounds. With sounds, the brain seems to adjust to them eventually, no matter how loud… but it’s unlikely (albeit possible, I guess) to “adjust” to having ice water poured on your face!
I don’t have any ideas for your Polynappers of the Future Fund, but someday when I’m out of college and actually have money, I’ll be glad to contribute.
Good luck!

One way to spend the money would be to buy a EGG (from http://www.pocket-neurobics.com/ for example).
That would allow to provide exact information about the sleep phases during polynapps.
If the “Polynappers of the Future” could provide those information, one could perhaps get some professional scientist to make a study about Polynapping.
It would also help us to understand some things about polyphasic sleep better like the roll of REM sleep.
If you don’t get Claudio Stampi to make test on you, you could still to test on you yourself.
The main problem for the “Polyphasic-Livestyl” is at the moment the lack of information. So money would be spend best to increase the informations. In addition it would be important to center our data somewhere, that it will be found by someone looking for information about polyphasic sleep.

This is true, I had a period where I had to sleep from 6-7AM to 1-2PM while my downstairs neighbors were reforming their house using really fucking LOUD drilling machines, while the whole floor&walls were moving. First nights were difficult but eventually didn’t even hear it.

When I woke up this morning my girlfriend asked me, ‘Did you sleep well?’
I said, ‘No, I made a few mistakes.’

[...] People sleep through multiple alarms, clucking chicken mp3s, and even ridiculously loud air compressors when they switch to a polyphasic system, so I guess this is a fight to the finish - brain vs. will (at least at first). The brain won this round, and just completely shut off my conscious experience, in favor of more sleep. But I’ll win the next round (yes, I AM my will), and ultimately the fight. It’s fine, I’ll just go to my corner, wipe it off, step it up a couple notches, and wait for the bell. [...]
